What is ISO 2533:1975 Standard Atmosphere?

The standard atmosphere assumes a dry atmosphere, with constant composition and no wind. It also assumes that the Earth is a perfect sphere and that the atmosphere is in equilibrium with the Earth’s gravitational field. The ISA is used as a reference for designing and testing aircraft, rockets, and other aerospace vehicles, as well as for scientific research and meteorological studies.

Additionally, ISO 2533:2016, newer standard also includes additional models for the atmosphere. Such as the sub-arctic and tropical models, which provide more accurate representations of the atmosphere in those regions.

Requirements of ISO 2533:2016

This lapse rate represents the rate at which temperature typically decreases with increasing altitude in the troposphere.
  4. Pressure Profile:
    • The standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is defined as 101.325 kilopascals (kPa) or 1,013.25 millibars (mb). The pressure decreases exponentially with increasing altitude, following the hydrostatic equation.
  5. Density Profile:
    • The standard density is calculated based on the temperature and pressure profiles. It decreases with increasing altitude.
  6. Composition:
    • ISO 2533 assumes a constant composition of dry air throughout the standard atmosphere. It does not consider variations in atmospheric composition, such as the presence of water vapor.
  7. Other Parameters:
    • The standard also provides values for other atmospheric parameters, such as the speed of sound, dynamic viscosity, and kinematic viscosity at various altitudes within the defined range.
  8. Tropospheric Altitude Limitation:
    • The standard atmosphere described in ISO 2533:2016 only covers the troposphere and part of the lower stratosphere. It does not extend into the mesosphere or thermosphere.
