ISO 2313 Textiles

What is ISO 2313 Textiles — Determination of the recovery from creasing of a folded specimen of fabric by measuring the angle of recovery?

ISO 2313 standard specifies a method for measuring the recovery from creasing of a folded specimen of fabric by measuring the angle of recovery. The standard provides a means of evaluating the ability of a fabric to recover its original shape after being creased or folded, which is an important quality characteristic in many textile applications.

The test method involves folding a specimen of fabric in half, applying a standard weight to the fold, and leaving it in that position for a specified period of time. The weight is then removed, and the angle of recovery is measured as the specimen unfolds and returns to its original shape. The angle of recovery is a measure of the fabric’s ability to recover from creasing, with a larger angle indicating better recovery.

ISO 2313 is applicable to a wide range of woven and knitted fabrics, including those made from natural and synthetic fibers. The standard is widely used in the textile industry to evaluate the performance of fabrics for various applications. Such as apparel, home furnishings, and industrial textiles.

This standard has two parts:

ISO 2313-1:2021, Part 1: Method of the horizontally folded specimen, specifies the procedure for determining the recovery from creasing of a horizontally folded specimen of fabric by measuring the angle of recovery. This part of the standard applies to all types of textile fabrics. Including woven, knitted, non-woven, and coated fabrics.

ISO 2313-2:2021, Part 2: Method of the vertically folded specimen, specifies the procedure for determining the recovery from creasing of a vertically folded specimen of fabric by measuring the angle of recovery. This part of the standard also applies to all types of textile fabrics.

Both parts of the standard provide guidance on sampling, conditioning, specimen preparation, folding, weight, measurement, and reporting. They also specify the precision and bias of the test method. And provide guidance on the interpretation of the test results.

Requirements of ISO 2313

Sampling: The sample of fabric should be taken in accordance with the relevant sampling standard.

Conditioning: The specimen should be conditioned in a standard atmosphere for testing textiles for at least 4 hours prior to testing.

Specimen preparation: The specimen should be cut into a rectangular shape, and the edges should be straight and parallel.

Folding: The specimen should be folded in half, with the fold line perpendicular to the direction of the maximum elongation of the fabric.

Weight: A weight of a standard size and mass should be placed on the fold line. And the weight should be applied for a specified period of time.

Measurement: The angle of recovery should be measured using a standard protractor or goniometer immediately after the removal of the weight.

Finally, Reporting: The test results should be reported as the mean angle of recovery for a minimum of three specimens. And the standard deviation should also be reported.

It also provides guidance on the selection of appropriate test conditions. Such as the weight, duration of application, and temperature and humidity conditions. Therefore. The standard specifies the precision and bias of the test method. And provides guidance on the interpretation of the test results.

Benefits of this ISO Standard

Quality control: ISO 2313 allows textile manufacturers and suppliers to evaluate the performance of fabrics for crease resistance. Which is an important quality characteristic for many textile applications. This can help ensure that fabrics meet customer requirements. And can help prevent costly product failures.

Comparability: By using a standardized test method, the results obtained by different laboratories and manufacturers can be compared more easily. Thus, This can help promote fair competition and improve transparency in the textile industry.

Consistency: By specifying the test conditions and equipment to be used, ISO 2313 can help ensure that test results are consistent and reproducible over time. Thus, This can help improve the reliability of test results and reduce the likelihood of errors or discrepancies.

Innovation: ISO 2313 can help encourage the development of new fabrics with improved crease resistance by providing a standardized method for evaluating their performance. Thus, This can help drive innovation in the textile industry and lead to the development of new and improved products.

At last, Regulatory compliance: Compliance with ISO 2313 can help manufacturers and suppliers demonstrate that their fabrics meet relevant regulatory requirements for crease resistance. Thus, This can help ensure that products are safe and meet legal and environmental standards.

Who needs ISO 2313?

ISO 2313 standard that can be used by a variety of stakeholders in the textile industry. Some examples of those who may need to use this standard include:

Textile manufacturers: Textile manufacturers can use this standard to evaluate the crease resistance of their fabrics and ensure that they meet customer requirements.

Textile suppliers: Textile suppliers can use ISO 2313 to provide customers with objective data on the performance of their fabrics and to demonstrate compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.

Quality control laboratories: Quality control laboratories can use this standard to evaluate the performance of fabrics. And to ensure consistency and reproducibility of test results.

Textile testing laboratories: Textile testing laboratories can use ISO 2313 to provide testing services to textile manufacturers, suppliers, and other stakeholders.

Regulators: Regulators can use this standard to evaluate the safety and performance of textiles. Also, to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.

Standardization organizations: Standardization organizations can use ISO 2313 as a basis for developing national or regional standards related to the crease resistance of textiles.
