ISO 2400:2012

What is ISO 2400:2012 Non-Destructive Testing?

ISO 2400:2012 Non-Destructive Testing – Ultrasonic Testing – Specification for Calibration Block No. 1

ISO 2400:2012 is a standard in the field of non-destructive testing that specifies the requirements for the design, manufacture, and use of a specific calibration block for ultrasonic testing. The calibration block is known as “Calibration Block No. 1” and is used to calibrate the sensitivity and resolution of ultrasonic testing equipment.

The block is made of steel and has a thickness of 25 mm. It contains a number of flat-bottomed holes with diameters ranging from 1 mm to 25 mm, as well as a number of side-drilled holes. The location and size of the holes are designed to produce a range of echo amplitudes and signal-to-noise ratios to help calibrate the equipment.

ISO 2400 specifies the requirements for the dimensions, tolerances, and material properties of the calibration block. As well as the procedures for using it to calibrate ultrasonic testing equipment.

The standard is intended to ensure that ultrasonic testing equipment is calibrated accurately and consistently. Thereby improving the reliability and accuracy of non-destructive testing results.

What are the Requirements of ISO 2400:2012

Material: The block shall be made of steel or other suitable material, and the chemical composition shall be specified by the manufacturer.

Dimensions: The block shall have a thickness of 25 mm, and the length and width shall be sufficient to accommodate the required holes. Thus, the dimensions shall be measured and controlled to within specified tolerances.

Holes: The block shall contain a specific number of holes, including flat-bottomed holes and side-drilled holes, with diameters ranging from 1 mm to 25 mm. Thus, The holes shall be accurately located and positioned relative to each other.

Surface finish: The surface finish of the block shall be specified by the manufacturer. And shall be free from defects that may interfere with ultrasonic testing.

Attenuation: The ultrasonic attenuation of the material used to make the block shall be specified by the manufacturer. And shall be consistent with the intended use of the block.

Identification: The block shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name or trademark, the material specification. Also, the block identification number.

Calibration: The block shall be used to calibrate the sensitivity and resolution of ultrasonic testing equipment in accordance with the procedures specified in ISO 2400

So, By meeting these requirements, Calibration Block No. 1 can provide reliable and consistent calibration for ultrasonic testing equipment. Improving the accuracy and reliability of non-destructive testing results.

What are the Benefits of ISO 2400:2012

Improved Accuracy: The use of a standardized calibration block ensures that ultrasonic testing equipment is calibrated accurately and consistently. Resulting in more reliable and accurate testing results.

Quality Assurance: Compliance with ISO 2400:2012 ensures that the calibration block meets specific requirements for dimensions, material, and surface finish. Ensuring that the block is of high quality and suitable for use in ultrasonic testing.

Interoperability: The use of a standardized calibration block allows for interoperability among different ultrasonic testing equipment. Reducing the need for custom calibration blocks and streamlining testing processes.

Reduced Costs: Standardization of the calibration block reduces the cost of producing and maintaining calibration blocks. Resulting in cost savings for manufacturers and end-users.

Simplified Testing: The use of a standardized calibration block simplifies the testing process. Reducing the time and effort required for calibration, and increasing testing efficiency.

So, Compliance with ISO 2400 provides several benefits, including improved accuracy, quality assurance, interoperability, cost savings, and simplified testing.

Who needs ISO 2400:2012 Non-Destructive Testing – Ultrasonic Testing – Specification for Calibration?

ISO 2400:2012 is primarily intended for use by organizations that perform non-destructive testing (NDT) using ultrasonic equipment. This includes industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, manufacturing, and many others that rely on NDT for quality control and safety.

This standard is also relevant to manufacturers of ultrasonic testing equipment, calibration block manufacturers, and NDT training organizations.

In addition, ISO 2400 may be used by regulatory bodies, accreditation bodies, and other organizations involved in the certification and validation of NDT processes and equipment.

So, Anyone involved in the design, manufacture, use, or certification of ultrasonic testing equipment or calibration blocks may benefit from compliance with ISO 2400:2012.
