    ISO 11446-2:2012 Road vehicles — Connectors for the electrical connection of towing and towed vehicles —

    Part 2: 13-pole connectors for vehicles with 12 V nominal supply voltage intended to cross water fords

    The ISO 11446-2:2012 standard specifies the requirements and dimensions for 13-pole electrical connectors used on vehicles that are intended to cross water fords. This type of connector is typically used on trailers and caravans.

    What is ISO 11446-2:2012?

    ISO 11446-2:2012 specifies the general requirements for four-pole connectors for vehicles with 24 V nominal supply voltage intended to cross water fords.

    The electrical connection between a towing and a towed vehicle is made using a connector conforming to this document. This connector is used in addition to the existing two-pole connector specified in ISO 11446-1.

    This document does not apply to three-pole connectors for vehicles with 42 V nominal supply voltage intended to cross water fords, which are specified in ISO 16750-3.

    What are the requirements of ISO 11446-2:2012?

    ISO 11446-2:2012 specifies the requirements for -pole connectors intended to be used on vehicles with a nominal supply voltage of V for the electrical connection of towing and towed vehicles, when crossing water fords.

    The -pole connector shall have a watertight and dustproof seal in order to prevent the ingress of water and dust into the electrical connection.

    The connector shall be designed so that it can be connected and disconnected without the use of tools.

    The connector shall be compatible with ISO 11446-1:2012 connectors.

    What are the benefits of ISO 11446-2:2012?

    ISO 11446-2:2012 specifies the requirements for a -pole connector system to be used on vehicles with V nominal supply voltage, for the electrical connection of towing and towed vehicles, when crossing water fords.

    The connector system defined in ISO 11446-2:2012 consists of:
    – a male connector (plug), intended to be fitted on the towing vehicle;
    – a female connector (socket), intended to be fitted on the towed vehicle;
    – a watertight cap for the male connector, to be fitted when not in use.

    ISO 11446-2:2012 is applicable to vehicles with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding kg.

    The main benefits of ISO 11446-2:2012 are as follows:
    – it ensures the safety of drivers and passengers when crossing water fords;
    – it prevents damage to vehicles and their electrical systems;
    – it makes it possible to connect and disconnect vehicles quickly and easily.
