    ISO 11446-1:2012 Road vehicles — Connectors for the electrical connection of towing and towed vehicles —

    Part 1: 13-pole connectors for vehicles with 12 V nominal supply voltage not intended to cross water fords

    In order to ensure the safety of those travelling on our roads, there are standards in place for the electrical connection between towing and towed vehicles. This article will introduce you to ISO 11446-1:2012, which covers 13-pole connectors for vehicles with 12 V nominal supply voltage not intended to cross water fords.

    What is ISO 11446-1:2012?

    ISO 11446-1:2012 establishes the general requirements for a family of 4-, 5- and 6-pole connectors, hereafter referred to as “the connectors”, for the electrical connection of towing and towed vehicles.

    The ISO 11446 series does not apply to:
    –connectors with more than 6 poles;
    –connectors for use in special applications, such as those in marine environments, or where high temperatures or other severe conditions are encountered;
    –connectors intended to be used at supply voltages greater than 50 V a.c. or 120 V d.c.;
    –vehicle-mounted sockets intended to receive plugs conforming to ISO 4400.

    What are the requirements of ISO 11446-1:2012?

    The requirements of ISO 11446-1:2012 specify the minimum technical requirements for a -pole connector system for use between a towing vehicle and a towed vehicle, with a maximum nominal supply voltage of V, that is not intended to cross water fords.

    The connector system shall be capable of being connected and disconnected while the vehicles are in motion, and shall be weatherproof.

    It shall be possible to connect and disconnect the connector system without the use of tools.

    The connector system shall be designed so that it cannot be accidentally disconnected.

    The connector system shall have a means of indicating whether it is connected or disconnected.

    What are the benefits of ISO 11446-1:2012?

    The standard establishes requirements and tests for four-pole connector systems used in road vehicles with 24 V nominal supply voltage not intended to cross water fords. The system is primarily intended to provide the electrical connection between a towing vehicle and a towed vehicle.

    The benefits of this standard include:

    Improved safety for drivers and passengers by providing a reliable electrical connection between towing and towed vehicles

    • Reduced risk of damage to vehicles by ensuring that the connectors are resistant to water and other environmental conditions
    • Improved compatibility between different makes and models of vehicles by using a standardized connector system
