    One of the major issues that arises when dealing with plastics is their potential to biodegrade.     The methods described in this document can be used to determine the aerobic biodegradability of a wide range of plastics, including those that are commercially available. They can also be used toevaluate new environmentally friendly polymer blends.

    ISO 14855-2:2018 Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions — Method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide — Part 2: Gravimetric measurement of carbon dioxide evolved in a laboratory-scale test

    ISO 14855-2:2018 specifies a method for the determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions. This method is based on analysis of evolved carbon dioxide.

    The method is applicable to plastic materials that are composed of at least 50% by weight of organic matter. The plastic material must be subject to an initial degradation test in order to determine its initial degradation rate. The ultimate aerobic biodegradability of the plastic material can then be determined from the slope of the regression line describing the relationship between the initial degradation rate and the amount of evolved carbon dioxide released over a period of 60 days.

    The method has been validated using laboratory-scale tests.
